Day 31 - Putney Bridge to Westminster (the finish!)
Wow! What a day. We started walking at 0530 and were immediately joined by around 30 people, many of them suicide-bereaved parents, some of whom had flown into the UK to walk with us.
The weather became progressively worse so by the time we reached Battersea Bridge it was raining heavily. This continues virtually all the way to the finish, however our supporters only grew in number, so by the time we reached Westminster we had quite a hoard in tow.
This wave of support shows just how our openness about our stories, the loss of Sophie, Beth and Emily, have touched people from all over the UK. We originally set out to raise a bit of cash for PAPYRUS Prevention of Young Suicide and raise awareness of suicide prevention by indicating it was a countrywide disaster....it looks like we’ve done that in Spades!
Our goal is to get suicide prevention added as a compulsory part of the school curriculum, our walk and campaign can only be measured as a success when that happens.
You can help us by signing our petition and by writing to your MP to encourage them to support the Early Day Motion proposed by Andy’s MP, Dr Neil Hudson. That is EDM 397 – Neil’s wording mirrors that of our petition. We need to get our decision makers to act on the fact that suicide is the biggest killer of young people in the UK. Since that is the case it is beholden on us as a society to help equip them with the skills and understanding that may help them saves themselves or their peers.
Thanks to everyone who helped us on 3 Dads Walking UK2022 and to all who have helped us shout loudly about the most dangerous thing in our young people’s lives – themselves.
